Knee, Meniscus and Arthroscopy - Part 1

My left knee was injured after sustaining a knock while playing futsal some time in late 2003. It was more of a kick than a knock; but I don’t really remember, as in futsal, the pitch is small and everybody seems to be cluttering into each other most of the time.

I realised something was wrong only when the knee started swelling after the game, though not by much. I wrapped an ice pack around it to control the swelling. That was cold, very cold. The swelling subsided after a day or two and I thought that was the end of the matter.
However, I soon realised that I was experiencing severe discomfort with the knee. I felt like there was a pebble lodged in it. Bending my left leg would cause a piercing pain to be felt in the area somewhere in and behind the knee. A visit to an orthopaedic surgeon is now inevitable no matter how much I hate the idea of a surgery. I was hoping that some physical therapy and medication would be enough.

The outcome of an MRI done on the knee showed that my ligament was fine but the lateral meniscus was torn. It was enough for the orthopaedic surgeon to recommend an arthroscopy.

“I recommend that we get it scoped” was what he said. I was alarmed. Scoped? WTF is that?
